When you grow up in a place where football is everything, you carry a certain idea of the game with you. The noise, the stakes, the way a city changes on a match day. Then you arrive in New Zealand and the game is quieter here, smaller in some ways, but it is alive, and once you look closely it is easy to fall for.

This is where we point our attention now that the World Cup has passed. Not just the giants far away, but the football happening around us.

The All Whites and the Football Ferns carry the country on the international stage. Wellington Phoenix give New Zealand a side in Australia’s professional league, week in and week out. And the national league brings real football to towns and suburbs across the country, often with a family feel you do not get in the big leagues back home.

What is different, and what is not

The crowds are smaller and the football is less frantic, so you notice things you might miss elsewhere: a young player getting a first real chance, a coach building something from very little, a community that shows up because it wants to, not because it has to. The passion is the same. It just wears different clothes.

Luego llegas a Nueva Zelanda y el fútbol es más tranquilo aquí, más pequeño en algunos sentidos, pero está vivo, y cuando lo miras de cerca es fácil enamorarte.
